Dear Vaughn Parents,

We are planning for a full reopening of school on August 3 to welcome all students and staff back to our campuses. However, we recognize that some of our students have medical, social-emotional, or other concerns with an in-person return. Per Assembly Bill 130 Vaughn will be offering an independent study program for those students in the coming 2021-22 school year.

In regards to in person instruction, Vaughn will continue to maintain multiple high levels of safety measures in the 21-22 school year. Please see the attached document that outlines the safety measures that will be in place for in person instruction. All measures meet or exceed state and local guidelines for COVID-19 and have been very successful in preventing any community outbreaks at our school sites throughout the last year.

In our independent study program, students will receive limited live online instruction (see below), and will complete independent work when not learning directly with a teacher. This program will be run through an outside provider, meaning students will not be learning from teachers at our school but will be learning from credentialed online teachers who will cover the content standards.

We strongly feel that in person instruction is the most effective method of instruction for all of our students as we move forward.

Independent Study Overview

Independent study is a form of educational activity undertaken by an individual student with limited supervision. This is not the same as the virtual instruction provided during the 2020-21 school year. Significant parent support will be required as part of this program. Additionally, the school calendar for independent study students will be different from our in person calendar.

(1) For pupils in transitional kindergarten and grades 1 to 3, inclusive, there will be opportunities for daily synchronous instruction. Daily synchronous instruction may be only a short period of time daily. The remainder of the day, students would need to complete work independently without additional support.

(2) For pupils in grades 4 to 8, there will be opportunities for both daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year. Live interaction is likely to be brief and students would be spending the majority of the day each day working independently without additional support.

(3) For pupils in grades 9 to 12, there will be at least weekly synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year. The majority of a students' time would be independent work time and students would need to learn and complete work with little to no oversight of a teacher.

DEFINITIONS:

Synchronous instruction: virtual instruction that is provided when both the teacher and the student are online at the same time

Live interaction: a connection over the phone, internet or in person that may be brief in nature to establish attendance, check in or other need

Please ONLY complete the short survey below if you feel your child's health would be put at risk by attending school in-person and respond no later than MONDAY, JULY 26, 2021. If we do not hear from you by Monday, July 26, we will plan to see your child in person for face-to-face instruction on August 3. You can expect follow up information from your school site prior to opening if you complete the survey.

The much anticipated In-Person return to campus for all staff and students is fast approaching at VAUGHN Next Century Learning Center. We are very excited to welcome everyone back and are eager to see everyone in person. At the same time, we understand and validate the apprehension that many of us are feeling and the many questions that run through our head. It is our desire to provide some ease and alleviate some of the uneasiness you may be experiencing by understanding that we are employing the most up to date measures and protocols as recommended by the California Department of Health, the CDC and local authorities. With that in mind, below I would like to share the protocols and requirements that both staff and students are expected to comply with upon our full return to In Person Instruction:

Daily Health Checks
1. Students must submit their daily health check via the Parent Square app
  1. If app is not available, parent/student will have to answer questionnaire in person
  2. Parents are required to take a temperature reading at home, if student presents a temperature of 100.4 they should not be brought to school
2. Staff must submit their daily health check via the assigned application
3. Staff must have their temperature read at the designated entry point
Testing
1. All students at Mainland will be required to test on a weekly basis per LAUSD guidelines
2. All unvaccinated staff at Mainland will be required to test on a weekly basis per LAUSD guidelines
3. A 10-15% sample of students will be required to test at the other campuses every 2 weeks
4. All unvaccinated staff at other campuses will be required to test every 2 weeks
5. Vaccinated staff/students presenting COVID like symptoms will be required to test Negatively prior to entry onto campus
6. Testing will be provided on site at each campus via an anterior nasal swab that will be overseen by contracted medical staff
7. To be exempted from routine testing staff must provide a copy of their vaccination record to Human Resources
Masks
1. All students will be required to wear a mask/facial covering while on campus and indoors (unless a medical exemption is provided)
  1. If a mask cannot be worn a facial shield will be required to be worn
2. All staff (regardless of vaccination) will be required to wear a mask/facial covering while on campus and indoors (unless a medical exemption is provided in which case a facial shield will be required)
3. All visitors/vendors onsite will be required to wear a mask/facial covering while on campus and indoors
4. All students/ staff and visitors will be allowed to remove their facial mask/covering while outdoors, eating lunch and or during physical education
5. Disposable masks will be available for staff/students who may have a need for one
6. Unvaccinated employees will be provided with an N95 grade facial mask
7. Athletes participating in indoor sports (basketball/volleyball) will be required to maintain mask/facial covering on at all times
Social Distancing
1. Student desks will be maintained with a minimum of 3 feet distance between each other
2. For classrooms where tables are used instead of a desk a plexiglass divider will provide separation and social distancing
3. Hallways/stairways and walkways will be 1 directional wherever feasible
Hand Sanitizers
1. Staff and students are encouraged to frequently wash their hands, if no sink is available hand sanitizer dispensers and or stand up stations are available
Campus Cleaning/ Disinfecting
1. All classrooms will be cleaned utilizing standard cleaning procedures (non-abrasive chemicals) at the end of each school day
2. Classrooms that have had a confirmed positive COVID-19 case will be deep cleaned via the approved use of the electrostatic sprayer if found to be necessary only
3. All restrooms and high touch surfaces such as door handles/ rails will be cleaned multiple times throughout the day
4. All classroom air filters have been changed and will be maintained per standard use and maintenance
PPE
1. Per updated CDC and CDPH guidelines, the best cleaning strategy is traditional soap and water, therefore disinfecting wipes will be available on an as need basis
2. Latex gloves will be available upon request on an as need basis

We would like to assure you that we will continue to monitor and modify protocols based on updates from the CDC and State and County Health guidance. Dear Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of everyone at Vaughn, we wish to thank you for your continuous support throughout this school year and look forward to partnering with you again in 2021-2022. While this year has been unusual for all, with a lot of challenges for our school and for our community, we want to assure you that we will work with you to ensure a safe, secure, and rigorous learning experience for your child going forward. Here are a few important updates:

The 2021-2022 school year will start on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. We are excited to welcome all students back to campus! If you have any concerns regarding return to in-person learning please reach out to the site directly so we can work with you to find a solution.
Our registration and compact signing for the 2021-2022 school year will be online using our Aeries Parent Portal.
- The registration and compact will be available in the Aeries Parent Portal beginning July 6, 2021 and we ask that you complete it by July 23, 2021.
- You will login to your Aeries Parent Portal Account and complete the registration and compact in the same manner as last year.
- If you forgot your Parent Portal password please click on “Reset Password” on the login page and it will send an email with instructions for resetting your password.
- If you don’t have an email please visit www.gmail.com or www.yahoo.com and set one up for free. Once you have your email address please call your child’s school site and let them know so they can add it to our system.
- You can use a cell phone, laptop, Chromebook, tablet or other computer to register.
- If you need any help our school offices will be open for support July 12- 30. Our office hours are:
  - Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  - Tuesday, Thursday: 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Your child must be present on the first day of school. We have many new students on a waiting list to enroll. The only exception to this would be if your child is ill on the first day at which time we would ask you to communicate with your child’s school site to report the absence.
Be sure to look over the 2021-2022 school calendar which shows when we have school days (regular, shortened, and minimum), and school holidays.
School attendance is critical not only to your child’s education but also for the quality of programs we are able to provide all students. Please partner with us to assure good attendance by using the calendar to plan vacations and other family events. By doing this you can help us provide your child and all of the children of the Vaughn community with the quality education they deserve.
If you are returning to Vaughn please keep the Chromebook over the summer and have your child bring it fully charged on the first day of school.
If you will not be returning to Vaughn please contact the site office that your child attends to notify them and to begin the formal disenrollment process including returning any Vaughn Chromebook and hotspots.
Our last day of instruction for this school year is today June 18, 2021.
